ESIP Community Contributions to the FAIR Convergence Matrix: A Hands-on Workshop Part 1

Since 2016, the FAIR (Findable Accessible Interoperable Re-usable) Data Principles have been bandied about in discussions by those interested in making data more readily available and re-usable. While the acronym (FAIR) is handy and certainly easy to remember, the principles themselves are not new. What is new is that the focus intended by those who coined the term is upon making data much more FAIR by means of machine action. Machine actionability requires the use of technologies and standards that currently exist, and those not yet developed that support the FAIR behavior of data for both machines and people -- including both researchers and the data stewards who support them. Progress toward implementation of the FAIR principles has been made in many science domains, such as the life sciences, but not much yet, it would seem, in the Earth Sciences. One of the ways in which FAIR implementation seems to be most effective is by science “communities” or domains coming together to develop profiles of the community based agreements that can be made with regard to the use of standards – for metadata, for identification, for transfer and communication protocols, for data representation that impact and facilitate the findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability of the data that the community produces and uses. This workshop is intended to apprise members of the ESIP community of tools that have been and are being developed in Europe, the US, and other countries to establish FAIR Implementation Profiles (FIPs) that can be published to a commonly known, open FAIR knowledge graph that is designed to accelerate broad community convergence on FAIR implementation options. After learning about the tools, the organizations, and the communities using these tools, workshop participants will be invited to explore FAIR implementation choices and use one or more tools (put forward by the GO FAIR initiative, FAIRsharing.org and others) to develop one or more draft FIPs (or reuse an existing FIP) for Earth Science use cases as they apply to finding, accessing, interoperating with, and re-using Earth Science data and software.
Workshop Goals:
Introduce ESIP community members to the work of the GO FAIR initiative on facilitating and supporting the implementation of FAIR data principles including the FAIR Convergence Matrix and FAIR Implementation Profiles..
Introduce ESIP community members to the goals and objectives of the GO FAIR Data Stewardship Competence Centers Implementation Network (DSCC IN) including the set up of a DSCC instance of the FAIR Implementation tools currently available, e.g., the Data Stewardship Wizard (DS-Wizard).
Demo the DS-Wizard or other tools for building a FAIR Implementation Profile (FIP).
Provide the time and opportunity for participants to join with colleagues to answer the questions necessary to build a FIP, and to use appropriate tools to document the discussion and community agreement.
Provide feedback to GO FAIR / DSCC IN regarding the utility of their FAIR convergence tools.
